In 1999, Illinois welcomed 76.5 million domestic visitors and 1.8 million international visitors. Illinois ranks 5th in the U.S. in traveler spending and 10th in its share of total domestic travel. Illinois is the 6th most popular state and Chicago is the 9th most popular city for overseas visitors to the U.S.

Illinois’ hotel-motel tax receipts were $156,752,590 in 1999, a 6% increase over 1998. The Illinois tourism budget is funded solely by 35% of these tax receipts. More than 51% of the state tourism office budget is returned to local partners through tourism grants.

In 1999, the top five states for providing visitors to Illinois: Illinois; Indiana; Michigan; Wisconsin and Missouri. The top five markets for international visitors to Illinois: Canada, UK, Mexico, Germany and Japan.

Chicago is the nation’s top city for business travel. Nationally, business travel was responsible for almost 26% of all travel in 1999 but it constituted 37% of all Illinois travel.Leisure travel constitutes 63% of all Illinois travel.

Illinois leisure travelers’ top activities included shopping, dining, entertainment, sightseeing, cultural (museum, play, concert), attending a festival/craft fair, night life, watching a sports event and visiting a historic site.

On average, visitors to Illinois in 1999 spent $108 per person per day. Leisure visitors spent $84 per person per day and business visitors spent $149.
