1998 Illinois Tourism FactSheets

Here are some facts about the state’s tourism industry in 1998:

U.S. and international travelers in Illinois spent nearly $21 billion on transportation, lodging, food, entertainment and recreation, and incidentals during 1998 while traveling away from home. This represents an increase of 7.5 percent from the $19.5 billion spent in Illinois during 1997.

Travelers in Illinois contributed an extra $1,394.9 million in state and local taxes in 1998 and generated over $2,503.8 million in federal taxes.

The travel-generated payroll in Illinois was nearly $7 billion in 1998, an increase of 6.9 percent from the 1997 travel-generated payroll.

The employment generated directly from travel expenditures was 297,700 persons. The 297,700 jobs directly supported by travel and tourism in Illinois during 1998 comprised 5.1 percent of total non-farm employment in Illinois. On average, every $70,451 spent by travelers in Illinois directly supported one job. With indirect and induced impact added in, total employment climbs to 636,000, 10.8 percent of the state’s total non-farm employment.

Illinois continues to rank 5th in domestic travel spending, behind California, Florida, New York and Texas. The top five Illinois counties for travel expenditures are Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will and Winnebago.

Illinois had 76.3 million visitors in 1998, 49.3 million for leisure and 26.9 million for business. Of the 76.3 million, 42.6 million visited Chicagoland and 33.7 million visited Illinois less Chicagoland.

Illinois is the 6th most popular U.S. state with 1,256,000 overseas visitors, a 10.5 percent increase over 1997 (excludes Canada and Mexico). Chicago is the 9th most popular U.S. city with 1,208,000 overseas visitors (excludes Canada and Mexico).

International expenditures in Illinois were $1,581.9 million in 1998, an 8.9 percent increase over 1997 expenditures.

The state’s hotel-motel taxes liability for 1998 was $147,849,571 an increase of 10.9 percent over 1997.

Total consumer inquiries (including phone calls, mail and web site visits) were 732,277 for 1998, a 28 percent increase over 1997.
