Through June 1993, calls received in response to IBOT’s advertising campaign were 19.7% higher than over the same time period in 1992.

Hotel/motel occupancy in Illinois through June was 3.1% higher than in 1992, with an increase of 4.3% in Chicago.

State hotel/motel taxes collected through April 1993 were up 21% over the same time period in 1992.

There were 1,404,000 international arrivals to Illinois in 1993, up 6% over 1992 arrivals:

Illinois became the 6th most popular state for overseas visitors, up from 8th in 1992. Chicago ranked as the 9th most popular U.S. city destination for overseas arrivals.

International visitors spent over $1.1 billion on transportation, lodging, food, entertainment, recreation and incidentals in Illinois in 1993; these expenditures represent an increase of 12.7% over 1992.

Note that while Canada served as the country of residency for nearly 24% of all international visitors to Illinois, Canadian visitors’ expenditures comprised only 6.2% of international visitors’ expenditures in Illinois.

The payroll and jobs generated in Illinois by international travelers were $309.8 million and 18,900 respectively.

International travelers generated $65.2 million in state and local taxes, and $117.8 million in federal taxes.

Forty-eight percent of the international visitors to Illinois came for leisure, with all others traveling for business or conventions. Top trip activities include shopping; dining in restaurants; sightseeing; visiting art galleries/museums; and visiting historical places.

An average of 8 nights were spent in Illinois, with an average travel party size of 3.9 persons.
